Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts should be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety measures should be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very vital to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is essential for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station must not be obstructed and an employee who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit things like for instance lighters or matches to be used while an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
