Forklift Safety Suggestions & Guidelines
In the US, 20,000 people are hurt every year in accidents related to the utilization of forklifts. And each year about 100 deaths are caused by forklift accidents. Luckily, correct training concerning maintenance and operation procedures could significantly reduce the chance of accidents. The basic safety regulations and suggestions below should be followed whenever operating a forklift.

Training
It is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that the correct training program is given to the employees and that operators of forklifts are certified.. Training includes a combination of lectures, presentations, discussions and practical hands-on training. Reevaluation should take place every three years. Forklift operators have to be up-to-date with current forklift safety regulations. Forklift training program content includes general workplace hazards, dangers of forklift operations, dangers connected to using the particular forklift which the employee will be utilizing and workplace surfaces and lighting. An employee must be 18 years of age or over to utilize a forklift.

Maintenance
To make sure that the equipment is functioning safely and properly, forklift inspection must be done each day. The inspection involves keeping a checklist of items and reporting any concerns right away.

The Workplace
Having a clean and safe workplace is important in the safe use of a forklift. A work site that is safe means establishing "traffic lanes" that are designated for forklift use only. Warning systems like for instance flashing lights and horns should be in place to indicate when there is an approaching forklift. Forklift docking stations should be kept in good repair and inspected on a daily basis.

General Guidelines
Included in the general safety rules of utilizing a forklift are avoiding known hazards on the ground, like oil spills or wet spots; lowering or raising the load only while the forklift is stationary; making sure that there is enough clearance for the load; and keeping hands, arms and legs inside the vehicle during operation.
