A container forklift is specially designed to load and unload huge, heavy freight containers. They are utilized to shuttle freight on and off ships, truck beds and trains. Container forklifts are the most sturdy and biggest types of forklifts manufactured. They need to be extremely maneuverable on uneven terrain and have enough torque and power to raise bulky containers safely. Usually, they have large pneumatic tires and heavy-duty diesel engines.

Like all types of forklifts, a container forklift uses forks in order to raise the containers. Forks need to be positioned to ensure the load is secure during transport. A container handler uses a device attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machinery is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.

The main purpose of a container forklift is to lift and transport containers. Regular forklifts do not have sufficient reach for working in ports. The forks are rated according to the most weight they can handle. The forklift's capabilities should be posted prominently in the cockpit and must never be exceeded.
