Choosing Between Pneumatic and Cushion Tires
Significantly contributing to the safety and handling of the machine are forklift tires. They also affect the maintenance expenses. The type of forklift determines to a large extent the kind of tire because most forklifts are constructed with a specific frame which accepts only a specific type of tire. It helps to understand the properties of both cushion and pneumatic tires before choosing a tire.
1 Check your forklift owner guidebook for specifications regarding tires. Most likely your forklift runs either on cushion tires or pneumatic tires. This would limit your options to the kind of tire wherein the forklift frame is made.
2 Check the kind of forklift. Electric forklift trucks and electric pallet jack trucks normally are built to utilize cushion tires that do not need much friction. Pneumatic tires are usually utilized for forklifts which run on liquid propane gas or diesel.
3 Check the kind of terrain. Soft cushion tires are constructed for even grounds whilst pneumatic tires are best for rough terrain. Cushion tires, if used on uneven ground, could cause the forklift to get stuck since they are set lower. Pneumatic tires perform well on gravel, packed stones and crushed concrete but not on really rough terrain and potholed surfaces.
4 Inspect space limitations. Forklifts utilized mainly for indoor applications must be able to turn in tight spaces. Cushion tires truly work better than pneumatic tires in those kinds of environments.
